Lois
Carey is a graduate of the Columbia University School of Social Work. She
worked for a number of years with individuals, families and children
before embarking on a private practice. Her post-graduate training
includes extensive Jungian studies, child therapy, family therapy and art
therapy before moving into the work with the sand tray.
Lois
Carey has been actively engaged in Sandplay since 1980. She studied the
process with Dora Kalff, took additional workshops with Estelle Weinrib
and Martin Kalff, and did her personal Sandplay work with Genevieve Geer.
She has been teaching Sandplay to interested groups since 1985
in such diverse places as New York, Texas, Oklahoma, California,
Pennsylvania, South Africa, Holland, Greece, Ireland and England..
Since
1992, Lois has offered Sandplay training under the aegis of the Center for
Sandplay Studies. These trainings are geared to therapists who are interested in
deepening their own sand tray work and consist of monthly, day-long
workshops during which she lectures on various topics relevant to the
interests of the group. There is also time set aside for supervision of
participants’ cases and for each person to make their own sand tray in a
supportive environment. Polaroid’s are given to the maker so that the
picture can be taken to his/her individual therapist.
Lois
is a member of NASW, ACSW, BCD, NY Society of Social Work
Psychotherapists, New York AAMFT. She is an accredited Supervisor for the
Association for Play Therapy as well as a Professor of the International
Play Therapy group. She is Past-President of the New York Branch of the
Association for Play Therapy. Workshops count as qualifying hours for those
interested in obtaining Registered Play Therapist status with the APT.
Lois is also a New York and New Jersey State certified social worker.
Mrs.
Carey has several Sandplay articles to her credit and is co-editor, with
Dr. Charles Schaefer, of FAMILY PLAY THERAPY, published by Jason Aronson,
Inc., in 1994. She has authored SANDPLAY THERAPY WITH CHILDREN AND
FAMILIES which was released in April, 1999, by Jason Aronson; Wiley,
