C.G. Jung: “The most damaging thing to children is the unlived lives of their parents."

Moving from a parent-child relationship to an adult-adult relationship is tricky business; the arc of human development forces change and growth simultaneously on each generation.

This passage happens only once.

Use this passage to lay a strong foundation for the future.

Sandplay offers a neutral space for necessary communication..

Hard-to-articulate feelings are expressed safely.

New boundaries are negotiated peacefully.

After the initial workshop, many generational pairs use Sandplay sessions 2-4 times a year as a way to stay on track through this important transition.

Developmentally, these are Big Years.

The young adult child:

Separates from family

Moves toward independence

Ambivalently still needs a parent

Chooses his/her life’s work

Perhaps chooses a life partner

The parent:

Both supports and withdraws

Sets new boundaries

Must embrace choices he/she might not make

Perhaps defines a new “in-law” role

Creates a vibrant sense of self separate from parenthood

“A ‘novice’ adult struggles to find his place in society; early adulthood may be the most dramatic of all eras.”

– Daniel J. Levinson, The Seasons of
    a Man’s Life
